Tips for Painting a Series + Moving House Update!

EPISODE 110

Do you prefer to paint in a series or on one piece at a time? As many of you know, I sit in the more is merrier camp and love working on multiples. This week, Richie and I chatted about why I prefer this approach and how I go about it. What becomes clear is that it isn’t exactly a step-by-step process—it’s much more higgledy-piggledy than that. Some collections are more accidental than you might think. And when it comes to naming a series, I could be a bit more original!

We also chat about my love of writing notes and lists, which leads to a possible new name for the podcast (well, not really). Plus, we talk about the power of rituals and our tendency to panic whenever we are creatively blocked.

It’s another big episode. Oh, and for anyone following along with our house move-there’s an update on that too!

A few things we cover:

  • The mixed emotions of moving house and my new obsession with Facebook Marketplace.

  • How painting in a series improves your work, creates efficiencies, and engages your audience.

  • Key factors when choosing a theme.

  • How to gather reference material including brainstorming, mood boards, swatching, and thumbnail sketches.

  • Getting specific about your parameters (we won’t call them rules).

  • Creative rituals including my essential ingredients for a beautiful painting session.

  • Our tendency to panic when we hit a creative block and why we shouldn’t.

  • The role that preparation plays and how it can help you to confidently paint a series.
