Online Class Guide: Choose the Perfect Class For Your Needs!

LAURA HORN ART CLASSES - FAQ’s

The right class will act as a catalyst for your creativity, giving you the drive and confidence to do something for yourself, build new skills, and connect with other artists.

Who doesn’t want that? But with so many classes out there, it can be difficult to choose. With that in mind, I’ve created this post to answer your questions in one handy guide.

Let’s get into it!

I am a complete beginner. Where do I start?

Firstly, welcome. I’m so happy you are here. Most of my classes are beginner-friendly, but the ones listed below are especially good for learning the basics and getting over any blank-page jitters.

The Melting Pot
This was the first class I created, and it’s still my most popular. It’s popular for a reason. It’s fun, accessible, and provides an excellent overview of all things mixed-media.

Watercolour Explorations
If you are new to watercolour, this is a gentle introduction. You’ll learn about colour mixing, different types of brushes, layering, and more. Super helpful stuff that makes the difference.

Minimal Magic
As the name suggests, you don’t need a lot for this one. You’ll be working with a limited palette and simple design principles. This one is a great skill builder!

Abstract Adventuring
If you feel a bit daunted by abstracts, I highly recommend this class. This class uses acrylic paint and has a very easy–to-follow format that can be adapted in various ways.

What is the difference between your step-by-step mini classes and your latest Creative Blend Art Program?

My mini-classes take you through start-to-finish painting projects. Each step is explained, so you can easily follow along. I always encourage students to tap into their own creative voice, but it is also absolutely fine to create work similar to mine. It’s a great way to learn.

The Creative Blend Art Program is targeted more towards artists who want to develop their own style of painting. The exercises and painting sessions are open-ended, with plenty of room for you to bring in your unique perspective. Rather than being project-based, the program is theme-based. Each month covers a different topic and includes a mix of painting videos, creative exercises, Q&As, guest artist interviews, tips, and more. It has quite a relaxed format, but it is loaded with valuable content, especially around colour, composition, and style development.

The Creative Blend Art Program covers themes including colour, composition & style development.

I’ve taken a few of your classes; will I learn anything new, or is there a lot of duplication?

I always strive to bring fresh ideas to every painting class I create. Inevitably, there is some overlap when I explain concepts and supplies, but every class is different. There are always new concepts, colour palettes, techniques, and ideas to try out. I also mix up the feel of my classes.

The Creative Blend Art Program is especially cosy and intimate, as it really is like you are joining me in the studio for a year. I share various different aspects of living an artist's life, which keeps it interesting and ever-changing! My mini-classes are still personal, but the main focus is on providing clear steps and easy-to-implement painting projects.

I don’t have all the supplies and need to keep my budget down. What would you suggest?

I hear you. This is something I am very aware of, which is one of the reasons why I am a pretty minimalistic artist. I am very selective about the supplies that I use, and I try not to own things that I don’t absolutely love. When trying something for the first time, I avoid big sets. Yep, I will go into the art shop and buy one pencil just to try out the brand. Okay, maybe not one pencil!!

Over the years, I have built up quite a lot of supplies, but most of my courses can be enjoyed with a very pared-down version of what is on the supply list. Some decent-quality watercolour or mixed-media paper, a basic watercolour set, and a few pens, pencils, and markers will go a long way. For more information about the supplies that I reach for regularly, check out this Art Supply Guide.

I already have so many online classes; how are your classes different?

I get it. There are so many online classes out there, and there comes a point where you wonder if you really need another class. Only you can answer that, but I can say that the number of people who complete my classes and return to buy more is pretty mind-blowing. Many students have taken ALL of my classes and revisit them again and again. From the very beginning, I always wanted my classes to not only be educational but also enjoyable to watch! Making binge-worthy classes is important to me and my cameraman husband, Richie. We take our time putting classes together, reshooting things if needed, and making sure that the ideas and footage flow beautifully.

Our mission is to make classes that make you feel confident and inspired to create.

I am very busy at the moment; is there a time limit on accessing your classes?

No! All of my classes come with LIFETIME ACCESS, so you can fit them around your life and return to them years later. Many students do this, and it makes me happy! Life is wobbly, and lifetime access is important, as you don’t want to feel stressed about completing something before it disappears. Also, just to clarify what “lifetime” means, it means that you can stream the class on Teachable for as long as I am a teacher on that platform. There is also a download option, where you can download the videos and PDFs to keep forever.

What is the format of the classes?

As mentioned before, the classes are hosted on Teachable. The format is mostly video, with the occasional downloadable PDF. There is also written content that accompanies each video in the Teachable classroom. At the moment, there are no captions on the videos. This is something that I want to change. It is on my list of things to do! Teachable doesn’t have an automatic captioning option like YouTube, so I do need to organise this separately, and I hope to do so next year.

When will you be offering your 6-week e-course, Modern Mixed Media, and how does this differ from your other classes?

The Modern Mixed Media Online Course is offered twice a year at designated times. This course is focused on my signature style of combining watercolour with botanical motifs and mixed media details. The course content is drip-fed over a six-week period to create an engaging experience. You still get lifetime access, but most participants work through it during the six weeks. This course includes a mix of step-by-step projects and exercises. To get notified and receive a special early-bird offer, put your name on the wait-list.

The Modern Mixed Media E-Course will return in 2025.

Do you have a favourite class?

Honestly, I don’t have a single favourite. The class I’m currently working on always feels like my favourite! That said, I love the interactive format and the artistic growth that takes place in my signature 6-week course, Modern Mixed Media.

For beginners or those looking for quick inspiration, mini classes are a fantastic starting point. The most popular ones are : Abstract Adventuring, Watercolour Explorations, and The Melting Pot. These are all brilliant beginner classes, but they are also inspiring for more experienced artists. Within the Creative Blend Art Program, the top 3 modules so far are Working In A Series, Confident Colour, and Stronger Compositions

I’d like to purchase several classes; can I add them all to the same cart and pay in one transaction?

This is a technical question that comes up all the time. Currently, on Teachable, you can’t add multiple classes to a cart. Each class involves a separate check-out process. The only workaround is to purchase a bundle. I have created class bundles to help people who want to purchase a group of classes in one transaction.

I’m still not sure what class to get. Do you have any suggestions?

You might find it helpful to think about what type of paint you prefer working with. Some of my courses lean more towards watercolour, while others are acrylic-based. I would also recommend watching the class trailers, as they give a really good indication of the type of content in a course. You could also check out my free course, Abstract Collage Creations. It’s a fun one, and it will give you an insight into my teaching style. Finally, you can always email me at laurahornart@gmail.com.

I hope this post has been helpful. Thank you to everyone who has joined my class community. I am grateful for each and every one of you!
