Tips For Starting a New Painting
EPISODE 79
This week I am chatting about how I get started with a painting. It’s a fitting topic as I’ve just started a commission piece. The first commission in a long time.
My commission process in the early days was… well, let’s just say that it was less than ideal! So, needless to say, I was feeling a bit nervous about diving back into custom work. But then I remembered all that I had learned. All the mistakes, sleepless nights, revelations, conversations. Every part of the journey that has brought me to where I am now.
I am not the same artist that I was years ago and neither are you! We are always evolving. So with new confidence, today I am sharing the steps I now take when I start a new painting or body of work.
Richie and I also talk about gathering inspiration from a variety of sources. Honestly, I just wanted an excuse to mention how much I enjoyed the Taylor Swift, Miss Americana documentary!
Here’s a quick summary of what you’ll hear about in this episode:
Making studies and working on multiple pieces.
Setting intentions for your theme, colour and composition.
Using references and doing your research.
Chunking the process down into small manageable parts.
Trusting your instincts and continuing to experiment.
