5 Ways to Simplify Your Art Practice
EPISODE 89
If you are finding it difficult to make art at the moment, you are not alone. There are many challenges that come with a pandemic. With that in mind, this week’s episode is all about bringing more ease and simplicity into your art practice.
From taking up an art challenge to doing little art jobs for your future self, there’s bound to be something in there that will keep your creative mojo going.
Richie and I also have a good laugh about the paintings that I have in the studio that are facing the wall. In other words, the ones that I don’t want to look at anymore! I wonder if anyone else can relate to that?
We hope you enjoy the conversation and would love to hear your thoughts on the challenge idea that Richie came up with! By the way, he doesn’t think I can do it without cheating!
A few things you will hear about in this episode:
Doing little art jobs that your future self will thank you for, e.g. making collage papers, creating a catalogue of ideas for your art, making an inventory of your art supplies, preparing substrates, painting backgrounds and so on.
Working in your sketchbook and using this time to improve your drawing skills.
Using limited supplies to create a body of work. For example, in 2018, I created a series using Payne’s Grey ink and splashes of coffee (scroll down to see photos).
Reinventing existing work either with scissors or a big tub of gesso or acrylic paint!
Participating in an art challenge. You could find one online or make up your own! All you need is a series of prompts that will help you get started with your art each day. Melissa Doty is a great artists to check out for challenges.
EXAMPLES OF ‘KEEPING IT SIMPLE’
Here are some photos from the “Neutral” series that I created in 2018 with Payne’s Grey ink and splashes of coffee.
