EPISODE 149

I’m thrilled to announce that the Laura Horn Art Podcast is back after a hiatus. Richie and I couldn’t be more excited to reconnect with all of you. To make it even more special, we're coming to you from our new studio! Join us as we reflect on the various creative spaces we've had, dive into the pros and cons of home vs. external studios, and share our thoughts on what makes for a positive studio environment.

A few things you will hear about in this episode:

1. My Art Journey: From Kitchen Chaos to Dedicated Studio

  • Humble Beginnings: I started my art journey at the kitchen table, surrounded by the chaos of motherhood and daily life. Paintbrushes in the sink, canvases everywhere—it was a beautiful mess!

  • Evolution of Spaces: We transitioned from having a studio at home to renting a studio, and eventually, we took the plunge and purchased a property to create a dedicated art studio. Each space has had pros and cons.

2. The Perfect Studio: Myth or Reality?

  • Home vs. Studio: Working from home was convenient but, at times, chaotic. Moving to a rented studio provided separation but lacked the homely feel. Our current studio strikes a balance, offering a cosy, inspiring environment just five minutes from home.

  • Comfort and Inspiration: The perfect studio isn’t just about space and lighting. It’s about feeling comfortable and inspired. For me, that means cosy elements like a comfy chair, a nice rug, and even the dream of having a studio pet someday!

3. Art Practice and Productivity

  • Mindset Over Space: The amount of art you create is more about mindset than the studio space. Desire and discipline play crucial roles in productivity.

  • Adapting to Circumstances: During the pandemic, I shifted my focus to watercolour and sketchbook work, which resonated well with many of you creating art at your kitchen tables.

4. Studio Setup and Organisation

  • Smart Storage: Keeping supplies accessible yet organised is key. I use trolleys, boxes, and trays to maintain a tidy workspace.

  • Zones for Creativity: Designating specific areas for different activities—like sketching, painting, and filming—helps streamline the creative process.

5. What’s New in the Studio?

  • Current Projects: I’m working on a big canvas, incorporating new techniques like gelli plate prints. Plus, I received some exciting new supplies from Etcher, including 100% cotton sketchbooks and pearlescent watercolors.

  • Upcoming Tutorials: Many of you have asked for more watercolor tutorials, and I’m excited to be working on new classes.

I hope these insights spark your curiosity and inspire you to tune in to our latest episode. We’re now releasing the podcast on Mondays, so you can start your week with a dose of creativity and inspiration.
